Chapter twenty-one

Wheels Within Wheels

Ray turned around so fast he almost cricked his neck only to see Elizabeth Russell standing right behind them.

“What are you doing here?” Ray demanded.

“First off, it’s a free country – I’m allowed to go where I like. Secondly, it appears that our investigations have crossed again… oh how rude of me, I should introduce myself – I’m Elizabeth Russell,” she said turning her sparkling, violet eyes to Andy and holding out her hand.

He extended his hand in something of a daze as her eyes became his world,

“Andy Harper… good to meet you,” and as he took her hand in his, he could feel a strange jolt of energy between them.

“Well, hello!” said Elizabeth Russell archly as she looked Andy up and down, then she added briskly,

“Come on, let’s keep moving. We need to talk and I know just the place.”

Even though Ray was annoyed by her sudden appearance, he found it difficult to say ‘no’ to Elizabeth Russell and soon they were sitting in a dark corner of a tiny, deserted basement bar on St Swithin’s Lane with three pints of Camden Hells lager in front of them. She took a long sip of hers and sighed,

“God, that hits the spot!”

Andy couldn’t take his eyes off her. Her beauty and aura of strength were incredible as she sat there in her perfectly tailored, black trouser suit. And she drank pints.

“Everything good at home? Nothing strange going on?” Elizabeth Russell fixed Ray with a conspiratorial look.

“No, all good,” he replied briefly. He was pissed off with her already for butting into another case – the last thing he wanted to do was involve her in the odd things happening in his home life.

“Good,” she smiled brightly, “Right, I’m sorry to carpetbag you like this, but I think the seriousness of what we’ve got here requires us to dump protocol and just talk to each other.”

“Okay, I’m listening,” said Ray. He had a bad feeling about where this might be going, but he would try to be diplomatic.

“I need you to lay off Global Actuaries Limited,” Elizabeth Russell said bluntly.

“What?” Ray couldn’t believe it. What right did she have…

“This is a vital part of my current investigation and I need Simon Montague to feel safe and happy. I take it you just met him?”

“Yeah. We both think he’s bent,” Andy said.

“Oh yes, as a nine-bob note,” she agreed, “But I need you to leave him to me.”

“Is it just our cases you want to steal or are you doing this to some other poor coppers?” Ray said bitterly.

“I know how it seems, but I need you to trust me…”

“Trust you!” Ray laughed.

“Yes, because I’m on your side. Anyway, you’ve got enough on your hands with the Marco Fabbri case.”

“How do you know about that?” Ray didn’t like this at all. How did she know so much?

“Okay, cards on the table,” Elizabeth Russell said, laying her heavily ringed fingers flat on the table,

“I have complete, top-level access to anything I want.
